How tag co-references work

Filmustage automatically groups different mentions of the same element into a single tag using co-reference detection.

What are co-references?

Co-references are different words or phrases in a script that refer to the same entity.

For example, a single character may be mentioned as:

  • A character name

  • A pronoun (he, she, they)

  • A descriptive reference (the man, the woman, the driver)

All of these mentions are automatically linked to one character tag.

How this affects tags and search

Because of co-reference detection:

  • Searching for a character includes all related mentions

  • Tag counts may be higher than just name appearances

  • Clicking a tag highlights every linked reference in the script

This helps ensure that breakdowns, scheduling, and budgeting are based on the full presence of an element in the script.
