Import a project from Movie Magic

How to create a project from Movie Magic files — a schedule (.mmsx), a budget (.mmbx), or both — without uploading a screenplay.

Written by Egor Dubrovsky

You can create a project from Movie Magic files instead of a screenplay. Upload a Movie Magic Scheduling file (.mmsx), a Movie Magic Budgeting file (.mmbx), or both when you create the project. Filmustage builds the project from the files you provide:

  • A schedule (.mmsx) brings in its scenes, breakdown elements, and the full stripboard — shooting order, day breaks, banners, units, estimations, and locations.

  • A budget (.mmbx) opens the budget import as soon as the project is created.

Note: A project created this way has no script text. Scene headings, synopses, and breakdown elements come from the schedule file, or you add them by hand. The Multiple Episodes Project option is not available for Import.

Before you begin

  • Export your schedule from Movie Magic Scheduling as .mmsx, your budget from Movie Magic Budgeting as .mmbx, or both, and have the files ready on your computer.

Procedure

  1. In the upper-left corner, select Create or Import.

  2. Under Choose How to Start, select Import.

  3. Drag and drop your Movie Magic files into the upload area, or click it to select them from your device. You can add a schedule (.mmsx), a budget (.mmbx), or one of each.

  4. Select Next.

  5. Enter a project name.

  6. Optional. Upload a cover image and add a project description.

  7. Select Create Project.

What happens next depends on the files you uploaded:

  • Schedule (.mmsx). Filmustage opens the project on the Script tab. Every scene from the file is there with its heading and synopsis, but no script text — you edit headings and elements by hand, as in a project without a script. The Stripboard carries the full schedule from the file: scene order, day breaks with their dates, banners, cast IDs, units, time estimations, script days, and shooting locations.

  • Budget (.mmbx). Filmustage opens the Import from Movie Magic dialog with your file already selected. Set the base location and currency, map your tag categories, and finish the budget. See Import a budget from Movie Magic for the full procedure.

  • Both. Filmustage imports the schedule and opens the budget import dialog. Complete the budget import to finish the project setup.
