Start a project without a script

How to create a project with no screenplay — Filmustage opens one empty scene, and you add scenes and breakdown elements by hand.

Written by Egor Dubrovsky

You can create a project without uploading a screenplay. Filmustage opens the project with one empty scene, and you add scenes, headings, and breakdown elements by hand, then build a schedule or a budget from them. Use this when you plan a shoot that has no written script yet, or when you want to build the breakdown from scratch.

Before you begin

Procedure

  1. In the upper-left corner, click Create or Import.

  2. Under Choose How to Start, select No Script. There is no file to upload for this option.

  3. Select Next.

  4. Enter a project name.

  5. Optional. Upload a cover image and add a project description.

  6. Select Create Project.

Filmustage opens the project on the Script tab with one scene named UNTITLED SCENE. The scene has no script text. Its heading, synopsis, and breakdown elements are edited by hand.

Add and remove scenes

Every scene in a project without a script shows a row of buttons below its heading:

  • Add Scene Before — Filmustage inserts a new empty scene above the current one.

  • Add Scene After — Filmustage inserts a new empty scene below the current one.

  • Delete Scene — Filmustage removes the current scene. The button appears once the project has more than one scene.

Each new scene opens with the same empty heading and the same buttons, so you can build the full scene list one scene at a time.

What to do next

Once the scenes are in place, fill them in and build the rest of the project:
