Add content protection when you export

Add extra content protection to a single PDF export, including a password to open the file.

Written by Egor Dubrovsky

When you export a PDF, you can add extra content protection for that single export, on top of whatever the owner has already set.

Note: This option is available when the project's owner is on a qualifying plan ($149+/month, or any paid plan active for 3 or more consecutive months). You can use it even if you are not the owner.

Before you begin

Add protection to an export

  1. In a tab that exports PDFs, such as Script, Scheduling, or Budgeting, open the Export menu.

  2. At the bottom of the menu, select Protected PDF….

  3. Review what is already enforced. Any protection the owner has set is on and marked Enforced — you can add more, but you cannot turn these off.

  4. Turn on the watermark surfaces, Include viewer identity, and Custom Notice you want for this export.

  5. Under PDF Lock, choose a lock. To require a password to open the file, select Require password to open and enter an Open password.

  6. Select Apply, then export as usual.

  7. Filmustage applies your chosen protection to this export only. It does not change the project's saved policy.

Note: Export-time protection can only strengthen what the owner enforces — it can never remove an enforced watermark or weaken an enforced lock.
